Plain English is a traditional joinery company that makes beautiful bespoke kitchens and cupboards in the UK. Simple and honest in design, all of the kitchens are crafted and painted by hand in their Suffolk workshop, by experienced artisans, who are trained in the time-honoured techniques of 18th and 19th century cabinetmaking.

Locally and ethically sourced, quality materials are used, which ensure their kitchens last for generations to come: the baskets are hand-woven in Suffolk, from willow grown along the banks of the River Box and the local forge makes their iron shelf brackets and hanging pot rails.

ABOUT US We established Plain English in 1992, first setting up shop in an old tannery and then later in a rather grand Georgian farmhouse deep in the Suffolk countryside. As the business grew we gradually converted outbuildings, barns and stables into workshops and design studios. It's where we still make all our cupboards and kitchens today. And it's often the re-imagining of life in this old building in its heyday - a life of genteel and bohemian aristocracy - that frames much of the inspiration for our work.

Kitchens Plain English are traditionalists. We make kitchens the old fashioned way, by hand. Bespoke kitchens; larders and laundries, sculleries and pantries, rooms dened by the dignity of utility, crafted from the best possible materials and infused with a unique sense of style, our kitchens start from 50,000 or $45,000.

USA Showroom Our showroom is now open by appointment only and we are working remotely to keep projects moving along. Our showroom in Manhattan showcases a wide variety of our bespoke cupboards and mill work including Kitchen Cupboards, Bedroom Cupboards, Worktables, Larders and Free Standing Furniture. Following our launch in the USA in April 2018 we are excited to be working on a range of projects from New York to California.

Interiors As part of a kitchen commission we are able to make metal screens and glazed partitions to create smaller rooms within larger spaces. We love the way they give a sense of containment to a walk-in pantry or laundry room, and how part glazing allows light to flow through a space. We also make bespoke wardrobes, and can turn an expert hand to pretty much any custom joinery within the home.

DETAILS Attention to detail denes a Plain English kitchen. Measured and imagined, sawn and sanded, hammered and pegged, honed and jointed, lined and waxed, polished and painted. How our cupboards work and feel on the inside is as important to us as their outer appearance. Tailoring, renement of materials and mechanical uidity are critically considered and engineered, even when hidden from view.
